“Great access to the Isle of Purbeck.”

Well located near the centre of Wareham but still quiet in the evening, and good train and bus links. This allowed us to not have to drive everyday. The bedrooms and bathroom are roomy, but I felt that if the house had been fully occupied then the downstairs would have been cramped. As mentioned by others, the stairs are "scary" steep and this should be taken into consideration when booking the property (n.b there is a good bannister to help with controlling your descent). Two niggles for us ...

“We enjoyed our holiday here a lot.”

Felt very at home in the cottage. Enjoyed looking out of the window on to the street and seeing the bow windows opposite - and the world of Jane Austen or Dickens. Beautiful garden to sit in. Wareham is such an interesting town, but so down to earth. And all around is Dorset... In the cottage the stairs were a bit of a challenge, also the parking, but we overcame both with care.

“Lovely old cottage in a charming small Dorset town with several excellent eateries.”

Rooms were all surprisingly large and we never felt overcrowded. The cottage was extremely well equipped with masses of crockery and glasses and kitchen equipment. Only missing a wardrobe in the fist floor double. With an old building there were steep stairs and low doorways but these were fully disclosed in the Sykes listing.

“Handrail at the top of the first flight of stairs needs to be extended to the top, as currently it is dangerous.”

Upstairs toilet door lock needs fixing and top floor door needs adjusting, so that it doesn't stick.

“Beautifully appointed and thought through.”

So many lovely touches that add to a lovely stay. The property is just as described. The back garden is a perfect size to play with the kids or have some adult time. The downstairs toilet was very handy so we didn’t have to go up stairs. The rooms were well presented and, as a 6’ 3” guy, I was glad the main bed didn’t have a footer. The location is nicely central with the shops so close, and yet the property is very quiet and peaceful. A great location for us - Corfe Castle, Lulworth Cove, Swanage, Monkey World and the Tank Museum all being wonderfully close which cut out all of that ‘are we there yet?’ conversation! We were able to park a VW Tiguan and Mazda CX-5 on the parking space. It was tight but not that difficult. Would thoroughly recommend.

“Access to parking sometimes difficult especially when neighbours car parked leaving very narrow exit.”

No instructions for re-cycling and rubbish. Garden overgrown. House facilities were fine - a home with character.

Thank you for your comment. Sorry, you found it hard to park. We are also sorry if the note about rubbish has been removed from the guest handbook, we will replace it as soon as possible. There is, in fact, no need to do anything special with the rubbish it could be left in the house and would be removed by the cleaners. However as most guests prefer, rubbish can also be placed in the bins where you park, one is recycling and one is general household waste. “We had a lovely few days at Ammonite Cottage, which is really well-positioned for exploring this area.”

We particularly liked being in the town and not always having to go out in the car. Despite being right on the road it was very peaceful. The cottage is very nicely styled - very tastefully and thoughtfully furnished. The sofas and beds are comfortable, and it was warm without having to adjust the heating. As it is an old property, you do have to be aware of low doorways (we had a few bumped heads) but this is clear in the property description. The steep stairs are really quite short, and as there is a downstairs loo, you don't have to use them that often anyway. The hand rail makes it quite easy if you go carefully. As for the parking - we managed to park two estate cars - if the second car lets passengers out first and then reverse in, it is much easier. It's the turn into the parking area from the street that is most challenging - much easier to go past it and come in from other direction. We managed fine - and really appreciated having parking space which is not often the case in town cottages. We enjoyed days out at Corfe Castle, Swanage steam railway, and walking on the coast path at Studland.

“We stayed for a week at Ammonite cottage near the end of July.”

We are a family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids aged 15, 12 and 7) The cottage was lovely and welcoming. It had all the facilities required, everything was easy to find. The cottage we felt was in an ideal location for a family. I think the only thing we could have done with really was a washing line, but we managed with the air dryer. The owner, Mandy sent us an email before hand with lots of information which was a great help, and we really appreciated the lovely hamper on arrival! Wareham itself is a very pretty town with all the facilities you could require. We recommend the butcher's opposite the cottage, and the Italian bakery! Very friendly service and gorgeous food. The Italian kitchen restaurant also was fab! Some lovely walks just a stone's throw away. Wareham is also close to the coast by car. We visited Lulworth cove, Lyme Regis, Weymouth and Bournemouth. Also close by is monkey world and the blue pool! All great family days out. The cottage we found to be comfortable, but the road it's on can be quite noisy on a Fri and sat evening. Lots of traffic and people walking by after a night out. We did find it quite cold in the evenings and it was damp-there was wet patches on the floor of the lounge and the house itself did smell strongly of damp. We had a lot of rain when we stayed and noticed rain water did seem to seep in from the door. However it's a very old, listed property so I suppose it's to be expected? The cleanliness was in our opinion satisfactory. The bathroom had been cleaned, floors mopped etc, but there were dirty marks on the kitchen cupboards, skirting was dirty and the walls were very grubby. We did struggle with parking. The house has an allocated parking spot at the back of the house, but the neighbours also park there in there spaces. It's very tight and can be hard to get out of! A couple of times we couldn't park at all, as a local lad parked in the middle to work on his car, and neighbours a few doors away who are renovating often had work vans parked up, blocking the way in and/or out. I don't want to come across as a moaning bag, this didn't spoil our time here, but it was inconvenient and not really ideal. On the whole, we all enjoyed our stay at Ammonite cottage, and our daughter appreciated all the board games on rainy days! The garden was pretty and peaceful, it's just a shame we couldn't of enjoyed it more. but the weather wasn't the best. I feel the property is best suited to young couples or families with older children (due to the steep stairs)

I am really sorry you found it damp or cold at all, we are always happy for people to increase the thermostat setting on the central heating, controls for which are in the sitting room. We do take your comments seriously, perhaps the instructions in the guide are not clear enough. I will add something for future guests about increasing the heating if they do not want to light the wood burner or gas fire and are feeling cold. There is a tumble dryer in the shed along with a clothes line and pegs which are freely accessible using the key code number. I am also sorry if neighbours were blocking the entrance to the shared parking which serves a number of houses, but over which we have little control. We do hope that you would consider staying again and have better weather next time! Property Owner

“We loved being in a cottage in a town as nice and interesting as Wareham.”

Supermarket close, lots of interesting shops, the riverfront, ducks to feed and lots of pubs! We found Ammonite cottage well equipped, warm and comfortable. A very interesting building with lots of original features, well restored. Lounge floor is a little uneven but 20 month old managed fine; stairs she needed help with. Bedrooms had enough space, beds comfy. The only thing is the stairs, which are very steep and needed careful negotiation but an expectant mother.

“Ammonite Cottage was perfectly situated for our holiday and parking was a bonus.”

The garden was lovely and the cottage was very clean and thoughtfully stocked with high quality goods. It had everything we needed. Our only slight problem was with the stairs. From the listing it wasn't obvious how steep, twisting and narrow they were. Although we are fit and active for people in our 60s/70s, we found them a bit of a challenge and think it would be useful if this was made clearer in the description. Thank you.

; games, binoculars, darts). Location is perfect, especially if you like messing about on the river, but also for easy access to Purbeck and the rest of Dorset. We tried some new places: Tyneham Village and Worbarrow bay; Arne nature reserve.

“Ammonite Cottage is very a beautiful 18th century cottage, situated In the charming town of Wareham, which has a great selection of stores, takeaways, and all that you’d need within walking distance.”

The house was spacious, well presented, had lots of equipment to make sure our holiday was as convenient as possible, especially with COVID-19 and the garden was a lovely space to use. One thing I would point out, the stairs are very tight and small and anyone whose not to steady on their feet might struggle. Majority of the sights and places we wanted to visit were in no more than 11 mile radius, so if you’re the main driver, this is a big plus point. We’re definitely coming back!

“The dishwasher was dirty and didn’t work , the television kept losing the signal and when I phoned about it I was told that when people are on holiday they don’t watch television but as we were out every day till quite late all we wanted to do was relax in the evening and watch the tv .”

The down stairs toilet was not fixed to the wall and the drain outside the patio doors smelled terrible so I had to buy disinfectant to put down it so we could have the doors open T.Worthington

“Wareham is a great place from which to explore the area - loads of good things to do in very easy reach.”

It's also a nice place itself and has some lovely little independent shops for wandering round the streets. And Ammonite Cottage is a lovely place to stay. It's clean, comfortable and well equipped - and close to shops for the all important pint of milk for the first cup of tea on arrival. The parking places are very useful - although I wouldn't like to park a large car / people carrier there - bit tight for getting in and out. And the garden furniture means that the garden becomes another room for nice days.

“Wareham is a great holiday base with fantastic scenic walking nearby and the town has everything you need .”

Ammonite is a comfortable cottage with charming bedrooms and well equipped Kitchen. The extension at the back is perfect to accommodate boots and outdoor clothing and there is a pleasant garden equipped to eat outside. Only one bath/shower room is a limitation and there are low doorways to be aware of. We try to get recycling right but there was not enough info, We worried about traffic noise but it was fine. Overall we had an excellent holiday and would like to do it again.

30.On our instruction letter we were told we had to be out by11.00. So can you explain why the cleaners were knocking on the door at 09.35.You must realise that up until 11.00 was part of our paid for holiday.So that day was ruined. We had a fantastic holiday and coming back to the cottage every day was a pleasure. My mother is 87 years old and was perfect for her to be near lots going on but to also be only a little walk away for quiet and to relax at the cottage. We loved the carnival, the food, restuarants, shops and cinema in Wareham and the boats for hire too. We felt like a local and everyone was very friendly. Thank you and we hope to come back again.

Situated within the delightful market town of Wareham is this fine, mid-terrace cottage.

Set over three floors, Ammonite Cottage is a Grade II listed building with plenty of period features and character touches.

After a day of hunting for fossils along the Jurassic Coast, relax and unwind in the sitting room, featuring an alluring woodburning stove to keep you toasty during those colder months.

Wander on through to the country-style kitchen, boasting a splendid Rayburn cooker and a selection of worktop appliances to assist your cooking requirements.

Just off the kitchen is the classy dining room, providing ample seating to enjoy a sumptuous feast over a well-deserved glass of wine.

Completing the downstairs is the delightful sun room which offers a quiet spot to enjoy a good read or to simply take in the view of the garden.

The two upper floors host the four bedrooms, sleeping up to seven people.

The first floor is occupied by a king, twin and single, all furnished in a neutral colour tone and are served by lavish bathroom with elegant roll-top bath.

Discover the double bedroom on the second floor, resting under the eaves of the roof with Velux windows providing some natural light.

Outside there is a series of lawn and patio areas where you can delight with a cold refreshment as you plan how to spend the rest of your break.

Take a walk around the Wareham Walls to find out about Viking attacks, civil war skirmishes and gruesome executions, while the museum is a great place to learn about the town’s connections with T.E.

Corfe Castle 5 miles; Poole 9 miles; Swanage 11 miles;

Wareham, affectionately known as the ‘Gateway to the Purbecks’ is an ancient Dorset waterside market town. Situated between the River Frome and quaintly named River Piddle, its charming riverside location makes the town a popular holiday destination. Dating back to Saxon times, the town was once surrounded by walls, and became an important port with boats bringing supplies up the River Frome from nearby Poole harbour. Today, the river provides a great playground, you can hire a boat from the attractive quayside and chug your way down the stream, take one of the regular organised boat trips, browse the colourful Saturday market or simply just enjoy an ice cream or a drink relaxing on the Quayside. Whilst seasonally there are also numerous popular events taking place beside the river. A short drive takes you to the Arne peninsula jutting out into Poole Harbour, a designated RSPB reserve, where you can stroll down to the water’s edge, taking in glimpses of the impressive bird population and often viewing some of the resident deer. The friendly seaside resort of Swanage is also easily accessible, where you can experience a traditional family-friendly day out on the beach, or take the coastal path and stop off for refreshment at Durlston Country Park. A real treat is to drive to nearby Corfe Castle and take the vintage steam railway to Swanage. Wareham offers visitors a super Dorset holiday destination at anytime of the year.
