About the location

LANGTON HERRING

Weymouth 5 miles.

Langton Herring is a charming, rural coastal village in the West Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is tucked away from main roads behind the brow of a hill that overlooks The Fleet Lagoon which lies behind the famous Chesil Beach – an 18 metre high bank of stones and shingle which is a World Heritage Site and also known as the Jurassic Coast.

It’s a 5 minute drive to both Duck’s Farm Shop and Café in Portesham or the mini supermarket in Chickerell.

And a short drive to Chesil Beach at Abbotsbury which also has The Swannery, The Tropical Gardens and the Children’s Play Barn. The traditional seaside town of Weymouth is also a short drive away with its exceptional sandy beach and many other attractions notably the old harbour. And Burton Bradstock (with the famous Hive Beach Café on Chesil Beach) is not far.

A little further afield are Portland Bill lighthouse, Dorchester, King Charles’s new but architecturally traditional village of Poundbury, West Bay, Bridport and Lyme Regis.

The Elm Tree Inn which is immediately opposite Cobblers Cottage closed in 2023 but the Langton Herring villagers have raised over £500,000 to buy the pub for the village and, subject to recruiting a tenant manager, hope to reopen it this summer (2025). In the meantime there are good pubs with food in nearby Portesham and Chickerell.

Or you can just enjoy the quiet in the garden of a traditional English cottage and evenings around the woodburning stove.
