    Mermaid Cottage is one of our favourite ever rental cottages. What makes it so special is that, not only is it in a lovely location, with a beautiful garden and all the facilities you’d expect, but also that all of the facilities are particularly perfect. For example, the kitchen is extremely well stocked. The internet is fast. The beds are very comfortable. There are items for dogs, for cleaning, games, a super shower, Netflix and Prime, and just lots of little extras that a home has but ...

    Mermaid Cottage is one of our favourite ever rental cottages. What makes it so special is that, not only is it in a lovely location, with a beautiful garden and all the facilities you’d expect, but also that all of the facilities are particularly perfect. For example, the kitchen is extremely well stocked. The internet is fast. The beds are very comfortable. There are items for dogs, for cleaning, games, a super shower, Netflix and Prime, and just lots of little extras that a home has but often a rental property doesn’t. We lacked for nothing except more time here! The location is very close to the beautiful Church Ope Bay—a climb down many steps and fine if you’re a strong walker, certainly worth it—but it also has a butterfly reserve just at the back, which was perfect for an older member of our group. Thank you for making the cottage such a welcoming place for us. We’re very much looking forward to returning soon!

Mermaid Cottage is a contemporary cottage within the coastal village of Wakeham, Dorset.

Just a short walk to the beach and South West Coastal Path, this delightful cottage boasts a spacious lawned garden, and two off-road parking spaces, making it perfect for families or friends seeking a seaside escape.

Upon entering the property, you will be greeted by a welcoming open-plan area, where you can unwind after a day at the beach.

The kitchen/diner is fully equipped with everything you need to prepare delicious meals, which can be enjoyed at the dining table.

The sitting room, complete with a Smart TV and games console, is the perfect spot for a family movie or game night.

If the weather permits, head outside to your private haven for both relaxation and entertainment.

When it's time to retire for the evening, head upstairs to the two inviting bedrooms, a double and a twin, both offering a tranquil retreat after a day of coastal adventures.

The bathroom provides a space to freshen up and relax, whilst a ground-floor cloakroom is also available for added convenience.

In the morning, meander down your road to Portland Museum, where fascinating history awaits you, while the medieval Rufus Castle offers serene views over Church Ope Cove.

Embark on an adventure with Portland Dorset Tours and Excursions, where you can explore the dramatic Jurassic Coast, discover Portland Bill Lighthouse, and enjoy stunning coastal views, all while learning about the rich history and unique geology of the area.

Enjoy a sun-soaked day at the rugged and secluded Little Beach, offering you a tranquil place to bask in the sun with a good book.

While the coastal town of Chiswell boasts a sandy strip of coastline just waiting to be explored; be sure to take a picture at the Olympic Rings Stone Sculpture, a lasting symbol of the 2012 London Games.

WAKEHAM, PORTLAND

Portland 2.3 miles; Weymouth 6.8 miles; Dorchester 14.4 miles.

Wakeham is a small hamlet situated in a conservation area on the eastern side of the rugged ‘Isle’ of Portland above the beach at Church Ope Cove. The wide road running through the centre was constructed to accommodate the transport of Portland Stone by horse drawn carts from the numerous local quarries. You can learn all about the stone quarrying at a fascinating exhibition within the local Portland Museum, and then explore the nearby coastal path, a steep walk down to the cove, passing the ruins of the Grade I listed Rufus Castle and St Andrew’s Church along the way. Sheltered Church Ope Cove offers a popular base for diving as there are numerous wrecks to discover off the shore, whilst there are also plenty of opportunities locally for fishing, climbing, sailing and bird watching. Alternatively take the drive down to the very tip at Portland Bill, which juts out into the channel and watch the boats brave their way through the rough waves. Whilst the nearby family friendly, seaside resort of Weymouth offers visitors plenty of family friendly attractions. A most attractive and unique holiday destination at any time of the year.
